Maya Arad Locality Constraints on the Interpretation of Roots: the Case of Hebrew Denominal Verbs

چکیده

This paper argues for a distinction between word formation from roots and word formation from existing words. Focusing on Hebrew, it is shown that roots – and only roots – may be assigned multiple interpretations in different environments. When the basis for the derivation is a word, this word forces its semantic and phonological properties on any element derived from it. To account for this difference, a locality constraint on the interpretation of roots is postulated: the first nominal or verbal head that merges with the root serves as the immediate environment for determining its interpretation. This head forms a closed domain: any further derivation takes as its input not the root itself, but an element whose semantic and phonological properties have been cashed out. Word-derived words thus have access only to the words they are derived from, not to the root. While the ability of Hebrew roots to acquire multiple interpretations is language specific, the distinction between word formation from roots and word formation from words is shown to be universal. This is illustrated here with English zero-related pairs, which are shown to exhibit the same contrasts as Hebrew between word formation from roots and from words. Showing the effect of roots in word formation in both Hebrew and English further motivates the root hypothesis, namely, that in all languages the lexical kernel, or the root, is distinct from ‘words’ – complex entities – even if this distinction is not always morphologically manifested.

Locality constraints on the interpretation of roots: the case of Hebrew denominal verbs

This paper argues for a distinction between word formation from roots and word formation from existing words. Focusing on Hebrew, it is shown that words made of roots may be assigned multiple and varied interpretations, while words made of existing words must depend semantically and phonologically on the word from which they are derived. To account for this difference, a locality constraint on ...

Nominal Roots as Event Predicates in English Denominal Conversion Verbs

Despite the high productivity in English of denominal verb formation by conversion, a constraint on possible interpretations is identified: intransitive denominal conversion verbs are infelicitous where the source nominal is intended to be an incremental theme (#apple ‘eat apple’), a patient (#shirt ‘wear shirt’), or the holder of a result state (#window ‘open window’). This little-studied cons...

Event Heads and the Distribution of Psych-Roots

Most syntactic accounts of psychological predicates rely on the notion that the arguments within a verb phrase are “equidistant” for purposes of syntactic movement. Such a view was straightforward under the original “flat structure” approach to VP, in which, for example, the direct and indirect objects are both treated as sisters of V. Following extensive work on object asymmetries (Baker 1988,...

On the projection of ditransitive verbs*

This paper deals with the problem of the projection of arguments, i.e., how the arguments of a predicate are integrated into a syntactic structure. My starting point is the model offered in Borer (1993). This model is defined by Borer as a 'syntactic predicate based account' of the projection of arguments. In the next section I will briefly sketch the different approaches to the problem of argu...

Analogical Generalization and Retrieval for Denominal Verb Interpretation

The creativity of natural language poses a significant theoretical problem. One example of this is denominal verbs (those derived from nouns) such as spoon in “She spooned me some sugar”. Traditional generative approaches typically posit a unique entry in the lexicon for this usage, though this approach has difficulty scaling. Construction Grammar has evolved as a competing theory which instead...
